Apple Unveils iPhone 13 Pro & iPhone 13 Pro Max — More Pro Than Ever Before

With iPhone 13 Pro, you will get the most advanced pro camera system on iPhone ever, a Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion, a leap forward in battery life, the fastest chip in a smartphone, 5G capability, and so much more.

CUPERTINO, CA Apple today introduced iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, taking smartphones to a new level of innovation. With an all-new Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion, both models offer an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, which makes the touch experience faster and more responsive. New Ultra Wide, Wide, and Telephoto cameras capture stunning photos and video with the unmatched performance of the #A15Bionic, more powerful than its competitors.

With these technologies, iPhones now feature impressive new photo capabilities never before available, such as macro photography with the new Ultra-Wide camera and up to 2.2x improved low-light performance with the new Wide camera. With new computational photography features like Photographic Styles, you can customize the appearance of images in the Camera app, and all models come with Night mode. With Cinematic mode, the video experience takes a huge leap forward with beautiful depth-of-field transitions, macro video, time-lapse and slo-mo, and even better low-light performance. Besides offering Dolby Vision, both models also come with ProRes, which is available exclusively on the iPhone. Furthermore, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max feature #5G with more bands for better coverage, a massive battery improvement for the best battery life ever on an iPhone, a 1TB storage capacity, and a Ceramic Shield front cover, which is tougher than any smartphone glass.

The Most Advanced Camera Ever on iPhone

In addition to new sensors and lenses for all three rear cameras, the iPhone 13 Pro lineup has the best camera system ever on an iPhone with a new image signal processor (ISP) in A15 Bionic for noise reduction and tone mapping. Wide cameras use larger sensors with 1.9 million pixels, the largest ever on an iPhone, to produce less noise and faster shutter speeds across a variety of lighting conditions, resulting in even more detailed images. In combination with the larger */1.5 aperture, the Wide camera on iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max offer a massive improvement in low-light situations, with improvements of up to 2.2x when compared to iPhone 12 Pro and nearly 1.5x when compared to iPhone 12 Pro Max. On both models, Apple's sensor-shift optical image stabilization (OIS) stabilizes the sensor rather than the lens, ensuring smooth images and steady video even when the user is not present.
This new Ultra-Wide camera has a much wider aperture of */1.8 and a new autofocus system, delivering brighter and sharper images in low-light situations 92 percent better than previous models. In addition, the new lens design, autofocus capability for the first time on iPhone, and advanced software allow for something never before possible with the iPhone: #macrophotography. Sharp, stunning images can be captured with objects magnified two centimeters from the lens, with objects appearing much larger than life. Slo-mo, time-lapse, and macro photography are also classified as a macro. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are also equipped with a 77 mm Telephoto lens, allowing users to get closer to their subjects while in video mode and take classic framed portrait shots with a 3x optical zoom range for all of their cameras.

The all-new camera features on iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max take advantage of a faster Neural Engine in A15 Bionic, a new ISP, and advances in computationalphotography. Apple's multi-frame image processing enables users to still apply their own visual preferences to each image using the Graphic Styles feature. Presets and customized settings work across scenes and subjects, and unlike a simple filter, apply the appropriate adjustments to different parts of the photo to ensure the important elements, like skin tones, are preserved. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max now offer Night Mode for all cameras, including the telephoto lens. With Smart HDR 4, images will be brighter, contrasty, and feature better lighting, even when taking group shots or in challenging lighting situations. Besides Deep Fusion, Apple ProRAW, and #Portraitmode with Portrait Lighting, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max offer other popular features.

A Massive Leap in Smartphone Video

The Cinematic mode on iPhone was inspired by cinematography and includes automatic focus changes with an attractive depth effect, so anyone can record cinematic moments, regardless of their skill level. You can control the depth of field in the Photos app and #iMovie for iOS, and coming soon to iMovie for #macOS and Final Cut Pro1, so that users can edit the depth-of-field effect even after recording videos. The Cinematic mode records in Dolby Vision HDR with A15Bionic and advanced algorithms.

A15 Bionic with 5-core GPU for Best-in-Class Performance

This new model offers even more advanced features than its predecessor, the A15 Bionic. The iPhone now boasts incredible display, camera, and video features that were never before possible on a smartphone. Five nanometers of technology allow the A15 Bionic to feature a new 5-core GPU in the Pro lineup, bringing the best graphics performance in any smartphone. This makes the A15 Bionic ideal for video apps, high-speed gaming, and a range of new camera features. Featuring two new high-performance cores and four new high-efficiency cores, the new 6-core CPU is up to 50 percent faster than the competition and can handle demanding tasks efficiently. The new 16-core Neural Engine enables even faster machine learning computations for third-party app experiences, as well as live text in-camera with iOS 15. Additionally, new advancements in next-generation ISPs provide improved noise reduction and tonal mapping.

These are the 4 things I want from my iPhone 13

1. A better battery

Obviously, we would like to improve the battery life, since who would not? The new iPhone comes with a better chip, so your app can make use of more processing power and have longer battery life. It would be great if we had better batteries.

2. Drop the notch

Samsung's latest smartphones have folding screens, but what also caught my eye were the front-facing cameras located beneath the display. The idea of a notch-free screen for the iPhone is appealing to me. (Related question: How many Android phone owners will be taking note of the new features the iPhone adds that #GoogleAndroid has had for a while?)

3. Bring back the charging adapter

You don't need that tiny plug from earlier iPhone releases to connect your charging cable and power up your phone. It would be nice to have a power brick similar to the one you have for iPads, but one that supports USB-C-friendly Lightning cables. The cost of these smartphones is already quite high. Plugin the adapter to boot!

4. Touch ID

Although I've never been a fan of logging into my phone with my face, I did enjoy Apple's Touch ID, where you could log in using your thumbprint (back when we had a Home button). I found it to be simple and elegant.

While you think about what you want from the iPhone 13 (let me know on Twitter), here are some other tech updates:

What else happened in tech?

  • A landmark ruling.
Apple is under injunction after a judge ordered the company to back off its in-app purchase restrictions. AppStore operations may be drastically changed as a result.
  • Social media pushes back.
A Texas law would make censorship an offense for Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube if they are found to censor conservative speech.

  • Facebook on my face.
A partnership between Instagram and Ray-Ban led to the debut of smart glasses. The experience of wearing them is described here.
  • More streaming price hikes.
Hulu is the next to experience a price hike.

Game break

Insomniac Games is very well known among PlayStation video game console fans. The company produces #Ratchet and #Clank games, and most recently its #SpiderMan adaptation delighted gamers. The next studio topic is Wolverine.
